Retro Roleplaying's last session of Cubicle 7's Adventures in Middle Earth will air this Saturday, the 4th, at 9:00 p.m. PST. Come join our crew as we delve deeper into the tomb of a forgotten leader of Men to uncover secrets long hidden in the dark of the world. Will our characters survive the revelations they uncover?
Well, we have a 50/50 record so far...the odds aren't exactly in our favor.
Also, with regard to Retro Roleplaying, a few more hard copy games we ordered came in this week we're looking forward to giving them a go on the show. We likely won't be able to get to play them this year, but they'll definitely make it on our schedule for future live-session reviews. The first game that came in was James Spahn's science fiction adaption of the OSR fantasy epic Swords and Sorcery WhiteBox: White Star! If you haven't seen it, check it out. It's a brilliant adaption for generic fantasy. There are no races, per se, but many classes emulate the classic roles played alien creatures. An advantage of this is that you can play in ANY universe you want with this one set of rules, from Star Wars to Firefly; if you get the Companion as well, you can even play a transformer. I don't plan on giving a full review here, however, we'll save that for the show. The next game we got in is something I just barely stumbled across, but can't wait to play: Low Fantasy Gaming! This game is its own brand of awesome. I can't tell whether to include it as an OSR or a reinterpretation of 5e, because it uses aspects of both. It also does a lot of its own thing. The volume is authored by Stephen J. Grodzicki and is a whole game presented in a single work. And the title pretty much sums up the game: it's a low fantasy setting. Think Conan and you're pretty spot on. There ARE rules for magic, but the way Stephen handles it makes magic actually feel wonderful and mysterious. As a fan of low-fantasy, sword and sorcery settings myself, this game is great. We'll try to hit this game early in the schedule, but it's hard choosing which games to play when there are so many fantastic ones out there.
What are some games you'd love to watch us bumble through or would like to see a live-play of before you purchase it? Let us know in the comments below and we'll see what we can do to help!
Happy Gaming!
